• Softwood is great value for money. It’s the cheapest of the 3 options and is easy to manipulate and work with. It’s main negative is worn in the name itself, it’s softwood. Properly protected and looked after softwood decking will last for many years. The timber decking and cladding association cite that you should get at least 15 years out of pressure treated softwood decking if it is properly maintained. Longer lasting variants are also available.
• Hardwood is the classic option. If you want the “real deal” then a hardwood timber is the only choice. Many people love the idea of keeping the beautiful natural colour of the providing tree front and centre. As with many products that have newer, high tech versions available you often find there is a certain feeling missing from the product it apes. If you love your hardwood decking it will love you back for many years to come. A 25 year lifespan is expected if well maintained. 
• Composite is the new kid on the block. A huge range of options are available here. Composite can provide a plethora of textures and colours while offering range-topping levels of longevity. It can be made to mimic the feel of wood without the dangers of rot or colour-loss. All these bonuses come at a cost, literally. Composite is the most expensive material of the 3. One thing think about however, the cost of 25 years of maintenance on a hardwood deck means that TCO ( total cost of ownership ) isn’t that far from a composite install.
