Martlesham Heath, Suffolk
Replacement garden boundary fence
6ft (1.8m)
Heavy-duty fully framed closeboard
Slotted concrete
Concrete gravel boards
Capping rail
A full boundary replacement in Martlesham Heath, built to give the owners privacy and security without asking much of them in return.
We fitted 6ft heavy-duty closeboard panels into slotted concrete posts, with concrete gravel boards along the bottom and a capping rail across the top.
The concrete is doing the hard work here. Posts and gravel boards are the parts of a timber fence that usually fail first, because they’re the parts sitting in wet ground. Take them out of the equation and the fence stops being a fifteen-year job and starts being a much longer one.
The slotted posts matter for a second reason. The panels drop into the slots rather than being fixed to the posts, so in years to come a single panel can be lifted out and treated, painted or replaced on its own. No digging, no disturbing the rest of the run, no taking down twenty metres of fence to deal with one damaged panel. It’s the sort of thing nobody thinks about when they’re comparing two quotes, and the sort of thing that decides what a fence costs over its whole life.
The run itself wasn’t a simple straight line. At one end it passes tight beneath the edge of a carport, so those panels had to be cut and levelled to sit square under the rafters. Further along it steps to follow the fall of the ground and works its way around an established shrub the owners wanted to keep.
